The light laser cannon is the principal energy weapon used by the starfighter.  Its simple accurate and easy to repair making it popular among mechanics. A laser  uses a tightly controlled arc of current to generate a burst of light that is then focused and refined. Though the common Medium Laser used on larger corvette and capitol ships is usually to powerful for fighter use the lighter and less power intensive Light Lasers are often seen.  While Blasters use complex energy systems that can break and Turbolasers generate massive amounts of heat the Light Laser is the work horse of the militaries vehicles. Most lasers are considered to large for hand weapons but are often equipped in or mounted on vehicles.  Lasers are considered to be a beam energy weapon because they produce a coherent energy "beam" though faster lasers will fire shorter beams. Story Data: Light Lasers are generally produced with a simple self contained mounting system that can integrate with virtually any power source with little modification. This standard makes them quick the change out in the heat of battle. While most Imperial ground crew are trained to field strip a blaster in under a minute an experienced gun crew can strip and reassemble a Light Laser Battery in less than 45 seconds.
